Storage tanks in nuclear power stations play a critical role in maintaining operations, including the secondary chemistry of the plant. Ongoing inspections and proactive repairs are important to maintaining operability of these structures.
A Gulf Coast region nuclear plant was experiencing challenges with a tank across a multi-year period. After multiple repair attempts by various contractors, the client was seeking a successful long-term solution.
The STRUCTURAL team was chosen because of their knowledge and experience working in nuclear power plants, including understanding and valuing the importance of the nuclear safety culture.
Another major factor was STRUCTURAL’s ability to assist in developing a solution using the CSS V-WrapTM Carbon Fiber system. V-Wrap™ has proven long-term durability, extensive nuclear pedigree and the solution developed was within the owner’s budget and schedule requirements.
The STRUCTURAL team mobilized to complete the repairs which took place over a 21-day window. The repair procedure developed consisted of cleaning, surface preparation and installation of the CSS V-WrapTM system to the lower portion of the tank and tank floor, in accordance with the approved design.
The project was completed safely and successfully, and the owner has a long-term solution in place that will extend the service life of the tank.
