Located in Pacific Beach, San Diego, this USPS facility had experienced significant deterioration with time. It consisted of a single-story structure with a reinforced concrete basement parking located under a street level parking slab.
The street-level parking slab had experienced significant cracking. In addition to the deterioration of the waterproofing membrane, it had caused significant leaks and subsequently, widespread cracking and concrete damage in the basement parking. STRUCTURAL was awarded the contract to repair the affected structure.
STRUCTURAL performed both concrete repair and crack injection in the basement parking garages and then performed extensive repairs to the ground level parking slab which included concrete repair, crack repair & applying a heavy-duty waterproofing system over approximately 15,000 square foot of repaired parking deck. Additionally, STRUCTURAL performed repairs to the sealants on the boundary walls and perimeter cove joints as well as window sidings on the exterior face of the building.
Safety and logistics were a challenge during the project as the building remained operational during construction. Pedestrian traffic management, re-routing, coordination of mail delivery trucks, and loading/unloading zones had to be very carefully planned. Meshed sidewalk fencing was installed all around the parking deck and entrance and exit routes were managed to ensure the public was protected from construction activities at all times. Despite these challenges, STRUCTURAL cultivated a safe environment and completed the project within budget and schedule which lead to more work opportunities with USPS.
