After 20 years of service life, a large (80’ x 20’ x 15’) neutralization sump’s coating was beginning to fail. The owner wanted to install a coating that would provide long-term durability for chemical exposure and hold up to structure settlement and cracking.

STRUCTURAL was hired to perform repairs on the tank and to install a new coating system. The project team removed what remained of the original coating, then performed concrete repairs throughout the tank, especially in areas that had damage from steam exposure.

Project Overview

  • Large neutralization sump in chemical processing facility
  • Coating failure from 20+ years of service
  • Installation of trowel-applied novolac vinyl ester with fiberglass reinforcement

A temporary cover was built to provide moisture protection during repairs. The team then installed a trowel-applied novolac vinyl ester coating system with fiberglass reinforcement throughout the sump. The system was carefully selected to hold up to chemical exposure as well as movement and settlement of the structure. Repairs took place during an outage over 11 weeks.
