Solid waste transfer stations play a vital role in managing environmental impact and controlling transport costs.

At Palm Beach County’s facility, years of heavy traffic had severely worn down the tipping floor’s concrete slab.

Project Overview

Solid waste transfer stations play a vital role in managing environmental impact and controlling transport costs. At Palm Beach County’s facility, years of heavy traffic had severely worn down the tipping floor’s concrete slab. In some areas, the surface had eroded by as much as seven inches. The uneven surface wasn’t just inefficient; it was a safety risk and a barrier to smooth operations. The challenge was clear: restore the integrity of the floor without disrupting the facility.

To avoid costly delays and maintain essential services, Palm Beach County temporarily rerouted waste to nearby stations. This strategic shift gave the project team a tight window to complete the work, but an opportunity to do so more efficiently.

STRUCTURAL worked closely with the team to meet the compressed four-week timeline. After removing the damaged concrete, crews rebuilt the slab with a durable five-inch concrete mix. They then applied two inches of the Laticrete EmeryTop 400 abrasion resistant topping to enhance both safety and longevity.

The result: a safer, smoother and durable tipping floor and a facility that could return to full operations in half the originally planned time.
